Fitness column – MARCH

Topic of the month – weights vs. cardio
There is the age old myth that weights can only help to ‘bulk you up’, whilst 5 hrs on the treadmill will ‘melt’ your fat away. However, weight training should be a vital part of your fat loss regime; not only does it give you an intense workout, weight training promotes fat loss by keeping your metabolism sky high for the next 24hrs (even more so than cardiovascular exercise), enabling you to burn more calories than usual. In addition, the more lean muscle tissue you have, the faster your metabolic rate i.e. the amount of calories you burn at rest every day. So next time you think about going for a run, try 20minutes of circuit training with some dumbbells before you leave the house!
